"Three Goddesses / Sisterhood and Sovereignty" is a deeply personal exploration of the cycles that shape a woman’s life.

The cycles of fertility, transformation, and wisdom. This piece reflects the shared strength and sovereignty that women carry within, as well as the powerful connection between women, nature, and the moon.

Whilst creating this artwork, I’ve drawn from both mythology and my own experiences to explore the mysteries that we, as women, often feel but don’t always fully understand.

The three women in this piece, painted in black, symbolise the phases of life that almost every woman goes through: pre-menopause, perimenopause, and postmenopause, or as they are more traditionally known, the Maiden, Mother, and Crone. These phases are an integral part of the Triple Goddess archetype, which has inspired me for its reflection of women’s power across all stages of life. The Maiden represents the early, fertile years, when potential and new beginnings dominate. The Mother represents the transition of perimenopause, a period of great change and growth. And the Crone, in her postmenopausal years, holds the wisdom and experience that come from a life lived fully.

I’ve painted the figures in black because black, in Egyptian mythology, symbolised the fertile soil of the Nile, soil that gives life even as it conceals the mysteries of death and rebirth. This duality deeply resonates with me as I think about the way we, as women, embody both creation and transformation. I feel that the colour black reflects the mystery of our cycles, the way we carry both life-giving forces and the ability to regenerate and transform ourselves through different stages of life. In my experience, these phases are not only physical but deeply spiritual; each phase brings a new kind of power, even as we navigate uncertainty and change.

The moon and its significance are central to this piece, as it governs the cycles of women’s bodies in ways that feel both mysterious and ancient. I’ve always been fascinated by the way women’s cycles align with the moon and how, when women come together, their menstrual cycles often synchronise. This is something I’ve experienced myself, and it continues to amaze me—this unspoken connection we have to each other and to the natural world. I wanted to capture that in this piece, to show how the lunar cycles mirror the cycles of womanhood and how this bond between women transcends the physical and enters the realm of the spiritual. The moon in this work holds all of that power, symbolising not only our bodies but the mystery of sisterhood that connects us across time.

There is a mystery in how we move through life, marked by cycles that sometimes seem to be beyond our understanding. I’ve often felt that women are seen as mysterious because of what we go through, the way our bodies change and adapt, and the way we can carry both pain and power within us. This painting, for me, is about honouring that shared mystery, that sense of sisterhood that binds us to one another through our experiences.

The tactile quality of this piece is intentional. I’ve always believed that art should be felt as much as it is seen. There is something revered and sacred in physically touching art. It feels like one has touched something magical, something beyond the physical. The texture in the flowing gold and the surface of the moon is meant to invite the viewer to engage physically, just as we, as women, engage deeply with the layers of our own lives. The tactile nature of the work mirrors the complexities of the female experience, reflecting how we carry the weight of life’s challenges while still radiating strength, wisdom, and beauty.

The royal purple background holds a special meaning for me as well. Purple has long been associated with sovereignty, spiritual power, and the divine feminine. As I worked with this colour, I thought about how it reflects the inner wisdom that women carry as they move through the different stages of life. The figures in black stand against this background of purple, symbolising the way we, as women, navigate both the earthly and the divine, carrying within us the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth.

"Three Goddesses / Sisterhood and Sovereignty" is not just about the phases of life but about the cycles of connection, how we are bound to one another through our experiences, our bodies, and our shared journey. It honours the sovereignty we hold over our own lives, the power of sisterhood, and the mystery of womanhood that links us to the moon and to each other. This piece is a reflection of my own journey as a woman and the journey of women everywhere, lifting each other through the cycles of life and finding strength in the bonds we share.
