"Mother & (Inner) Child"  is a tender exploration of the universal longing for motherhood and the nurturing bond that transcends time and space. It speaks to those who dream of becoming a mother but face obstacles such as infertility, illness, mental health, or cultural challenges. It honours women who have experienced the profound loss of miscarriage or the grief of losing a child. Yet, it also invites a broader interpretation—one that reflects the journey of nurturing the inner child within us, even when motherhood in its traditional sense has not been part of our lives.

For me, this painting is deeply personal. As someone who is not a mother due to my own illness, it represents the process of self-nurturing and finding solace in embracing and healing my inner child. It reflects the quiet strength of caring for oneself, the resilience required to navigate life with illness, and the beauty of finding peace and acceptance within our own journeys.

Beyond the personal, this piece also explores the societal perception of women as caregivers. Whether we are mothers or not, women are often expected to embody the figure of a mother—offering care, support, and nurture to those around us. This caregiving role, though deeply fulfilling, can also weigh heavily. The painting is a reminder that caregiving starts with ourselves, and nurturing our own inner child is a vital part of that process.

The faceless figures are intentionally left open to interpretation, allowing the viewer to project their own emotions and stories. Whether it speaks to the loss of a child, the longing for motherhood, the dream of becoming a mother, or the act of nurturing oneself, this abstraction creates a deeply personal and intimate connection with the painting.

The warm palette of golds and yellows evokes a sense of life, hope, and healing, while the gold leaf symbolises the sacredness and fragility of the bond—be it between a mother and child or with oneself. The soft, flowing forms, painted in acrylic and oils, lend a timeless and nurturing quality, inviting quiet contemplation on what it means to give and receive love.

Creating this piece was an emotional journey for me, one that acknowledges not only the experiences of those around me but also my own. Mother & (Inner) Child is a reminder of the preciousness of life, the many forms love and care can take, and the strength found in nurturing ourselves and others.

This piece is part of The Female Journey series, a body of work that seeks to amplify women’s voices and experiences while creating a safe space for dialogue, healing, and connection.
