"Don’t Let My Tears Fall, It Will Sting My Skin" is a poignant tribute to the strength and resilience of women battling breast cancer.
Created in memory of my dear friend who courageously fought for eight years before succumbing to the disease, this piece extends beyond her story. It also honours other close friends who fought with grace and bravery but ultimately could not overcome the devastating reality of breast cancer. This artwork stands as a testament to all women around the world facing this relentless disease every day.
Layered with symbolism, this piece mirrors the aggressive nature of the illness and the emotional and physical journey it imposes. The faceless figure, lacking arms, draws inspiration from the iconic Venus de Milo, a sculpture that has long stood as a representation of beauty, strength, and timeless femininity, despite its broken form. Like the Venus de Milo, whose missing arms have not diminished her power as a symbol of grace, the lack of arms in this female figure signifies the effects of lymphoedema, a common result of damaged lymph nodes due to the aggressive spread and cancer treatments, yet also highlights the inner strength and resilience women must carry as they navigate their disease.
Moulding paste represents the cracks and damage left behind by both the disease and its treatments, while the concrete-like sections of the body further emphasise the internal strength women possess, even as their bodies weaken and crack. This also reflects the alienation women may feel, struggling to hold onto their identity and femininity as the disease takes its toll, much like the fractured beauty of the Venus, whose grace remains intact despite her physical losses.
With one in eight women worldwide diagnosed with breast cancer, its impact ripples through families, friends, and communities. I hope my art piece serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of breast cancer awareness—encouraging regular self-examinations, staying informed, and attending screenings. Early detection can save lives, and fostering open conversations about breast health is crucial.
Though deeply personal, this work transcends my own experiences. It honours all women affected by breast cancer, standing as a visual reminder of their courage and fortitude. My hope is that it invites the viewer to reflect on the significance of supporting women through this journey and the ongoing fight against this devastating disease.
In every scar, every crack, and every wound lies a testament to a woman’s will to survive. This piece ensures that their struggle, strength, and journey are never forgotten.
